Wu Guanzhong is one of the most famous painters, fine arts theorists and educationalists on the contemporary fine arts scene in China. His paintings have been renowned at home and abroad and many of his views on art, art theses and educational thoughts are of great, importance, both on the fine arts scene and in art theory circles.
More than 30 years ago, Wu Guanzhong was quietly working hard to create a distinctively Chinese style based on Western painting traditions. In the mid-70s, he returned to the Chinese tradition of painting in ink on paper to search for more new and beautiful forms of artistic expression and creation.
As a successor to the Painting from the Heart -Selected Works of Wu Guanzhong, published in 1989, this album, Searching for the Understanding Mind-Select Works of Wu Guanzhong in 1990s contains excellent pictures and essays published by the Foreign Languages Press. It includes his 76 latest wash paintings, oil paintings, watercolors and sketches created in the early 90s. Most of the paintings are accompanied by creation notes and brief informal essays by the painter. Furthermore, at the beginning and end of the album, three pieces of comment written by domestic and foreign critics are reprinted. Together with these comments some paintings are added. In this way, readers and art-lovers will have a better understanding of Wu Guanzhong's creative Intentions and his latest artworks.
